Our exquisite parasols are handcrafted in Bali, featuring canopies that are meticulously sewn onto a round bamboo frame, which is suspended from the ceiling. The digitally printed fabrics are aligned with precision to ensure that the patterns seamlessly match at the edges and joins. Our hand painted canopies are created entirely by hand, without the use of stencils or sketches, resulting in a beautiful and meditative process that can take over a full day to complete.
Distinct from other Balinese parasols, ours are adorned with intricate designs that cover the entire canopy, allowing for a delightful experience as sunlight filters through the stunning artwork. The handmade nature of these parasols is a key aspect of their charm; many of the techniques involved cannot be mechanized without sacrificing the unique beauty and character of the fabrics. Additionally, the parasols feature contrasting coloured or thread-work linings, ensuring that the interior—viewed while sitting beneath them—is as visually striking as the exterior.
The round bamboo parasol poles are skillfully carved by artisans using chisels, with the pattern being carved twice for precision. Initially, they make all the cuts in one direction along the pole, then rotate the pole to carve in the opposite direction, creating a detailed design. After the pattern is complete, the notches are painted with metallic paint to enhance their appearance.
The intricate thread-work within our round bamboo parasols is performed early in the production process, following the installation of the spokes into the central hub. Artisans meticulously weave the threads around the spokes, a task that can take an entire day to finish.
The fringing is crafted by hand in long sections and is sewn around the parasol after it has been painted. Once the fringing is securely attached, tassels are then sewn on to complete the design.
